Do not think that there is an obvious separation between the secular and religious in Islam. Islamic culture is a blending of these two aspects of society, one could theoretically one could trace this melding back to the word Islam itself which means "to surrender oneself ...to the will of God" the surrender which is being discussed is total and uncompromising. This is represented in Islam's prophet Muhammad, who served as both a religious and secular leader,
whose life also served as a model for the Muslim faith. The Islamic faith also contains two key books which the practicing Muslim must know, the first is the Qur'an (or Koran) which is a collection of Allah's revelations to Muhammad, (as well as parts of the Old Testament). The Second is the Sunnah which can be thought of as the practical guide to living as a Muslim, using Muhammad's life as the model. Both of these books are essential, to living a right life. As always I could go on forever, but then why come to class?
