Salt is an essential mineral to our survival, in West African culture it was the staple of economic prosperity. Therefore we will be focusing our efforts on this wonder mineral, and its relationship to the empires the Ghana & Mali. during the middle ages in West Africa. We will also be discussing the daily life of West Africans this week, with a particular focus on the role of the griot in transmission and preservation of cultural history and traditions. We will then analyze the role the gold and salt trade played in the development of early W. African empires.
Speaking of salt, this week's homework is to keep a log of how much salt you consume on a daily basis, and create a "salt-log". The point of this exercise is two fold, to allow you to see how something which may be held of great value at one point of time could become common place later down the line, and to allow students to analyze and reflect upon their dietary habits. There will be a culminating lesson for this homework assignment but for now just create the log in accordance to the guidelines you wrote down in class.
